Plaster repairs and skimming, ready for the next stage.
Uneven repairs and damaged plaster can show through a fresh coat of paint. Plastering gives the decorating stage a suitable background, whether you are making good after electrical work, repairing local damage or improving a larger area. Alex Trend Painters handles plastering enquiries in Dublin and Kildare alongside its painting and decorating services.
The assessment starts with the background. A firmly bonded wall with a few damaged patches may need local repairs; a wider area can call for skimming where the substrate is suitable. Loose material, previous coatings and the junction between old and new work all affect the preparation. Share photographs of the whole wall or ceiling as well as the damaged area.
Tell us how the damage developed and whether any leak or other underlying cause has been resolved. Recurring movement or active moisture needs attention before cosmetic repairs. Once the background is ready, we can coordinate interior painting or wallpaper hanging with the repair and drying stages.
A closer look at the work
Local wall repairs
Holes, damaged patches and areas exposed after removing fittings can need making good before painting. The repair should suit the existing background and the extent of the damage. Tell us about recent electrical, plumbing or other work, and include photographs of the surrounding wall as well as the affected area.
Skimming and uneven surfaces
A broader skim may be considered where the existing surface is suitable but the finish needs improvement. Adhesion, substrate condition and previous coatings matter; a new layer should not simply cover a failing background. We discuss whether local repairs or more extensive preparation makes sense for the area and the finish you want.
Ceilings needing attention
Ceiling patches, old damage and uneven finishes need careful assessment, particularly where staining or cracking has returned. Tell us if a leak has been repaired and whether the area is dry. The proposed work should separate the cause of the damage from the plaster repair and subsequent painting.
Preparation before wallpaper
Wallpaper can reveal imperfections rather than hide them, especially with thin or reflective finishes. The wall needs to be sufficiently smooth, sound and suitable for the selected paper and adhesive. Repairing the background first helps the hanging stage, while the drying and priming requirements should follow the materials being used.
Let’s plan your plastering project.
Send a few details about the property and the finish you have in mind. We’ll discuss the next step towards your quotation.
Allow the preparation its proper place in the programme.
Include the approximate area, access height, present finish and intended decoration when asking for a plastering quote. Mention wallpaper removal, recent wiring or plumbing, staining and any previous repairs. Ask whether the scope covers removal of loose material, local making-good or a wider skim, protection and the decorative finish afterwards.
New plaster needs suitable drying conditions before decoration, and the first coating must suit the plaster and paint system. Avoid choosing a fixed number of days without considering thickness, ventilation and the actual background. Gyproc Ireland’s Skimcoat data sheet explains drying and decoration for that product; the instructions for the materials used on your project guide the next stage.

Local planning. Attention to your property.
Dublin apartments and older houses can need making-good around altered fittings or previous repairs, while Kildare homes may need walls prepared during a wider refresh. The same visible mark can have different causes. Tell us the history of the area so the repair specification follows the property rather than a standard cosmetic treatment.

What affects the cost of plaster repairs or skimming?
The extent of damage, condition of the background, area, access height and preparation all affect the price. Local patch repairs and a full wall skim are different scopes. Include the intended paint or wallpaper finish when requesting a quote so repair, drying and decorating can be planned together.
Can you repair plaster before painting?
Plaster repairs can be discussed as part of the decorating project. Identify the damaged areas and tell us about any known cause. The quote should set out the repair, preparation and painting stages separately where needed.
How soon can repaired plaster be painted?
It depends on the material, thickness and conditions. The surface must be ready for the selected coating system. Follow the repair and paint manufacturers’ instructions, and allow the programme to reflect the actual drying conditions.
Will plastering permanently stop a crack returning?
That cannot be assumed. A crack may relate to shrinkage, a local defect or ongoing movement. Recurring or concerning cracking needs appropriate investigation. Cosmetic making-good should not be presented as a structural solution.
What if the area has damp or water staining?
Tell us whether the source has been identified and repaired. Active moisture needs addressing first, and the surface must be suitable before making-good and decoration. Repainting or skimming over the symptom does not solve an unresolved leak.
Can plastering and wallpapering be planned together?
Yes. The repair and drying stage should come before hanging, with preparation suitable for the selected paper and adhesive. Sharing the intended wallpaper details early helps the stages be considered together.
